Well it is that time of year again as September rolls round the end of season finals arrive. This time it was the Formula Champs which included the BRCA Mid South Region - 1/10th Off Road F3,4,5 and the F2 champs.Stotfold Model Car Club hosted the event this year and they did a great job considering the weather conditions on the Saturday, which was the 2WD event, the 4WD was run on the Sunday. The KyoshoTeam were represented by Ben Pugh, Nick Caro, John Langley and Lee Romang and Arty Silins.

Saturday 10th September 2WD

The weather was not doing us any favours and heavy rain was fell from the start of the day. So after a wet couple of practice rounds we set about qualifying. The rain had eased a bit which actual made the track more difficult as it became greasy. Nick and Lee were running the 3 gear upright gear box while Ben stayed all day on the 3 gear laydown version.

Round 1 was a tough start with Nick having an issue and Lee putting in the best round for the team in the F3,4,5’s with a 17. Ben was faring better in the F2’s with a commendable 8th in round.

Round 2 saw Nick put an great run in getting 4th in round and Lee getting a 7th. Ben managed a 17th.
The changeable weather was making things more intesting as it would seem the more it rained the faster the track became therefore it ended up being the only time when you wanted it to rain more for your race!

Round 3 came and this saw Nick cement his place in the top 10 of the F3,4,5’s with a 6th. Lee was hanging in there with an 11th in round which meant he was on the bubble in 10th overall. Ben had another solid run and was on the edge of the top 10.

Round 4 and with it all to play for Nick went out and had a fantastic run taking TQ for the round leaving him 3rd overall. Lee was the unlucky man having improved his score with a 9th in round it wasn’t enough to keep him in the top 10 and he ended up the dreaded BQ! Ben also was not able to make the top 10 just missing out finishing 12th overall. Other drivers John Langley and Arty Silins finished 56 and 67 respectively.

Finals time.

Mixed results in the finals. Lee tried the 3 gear laydown for the final and did all he could do leading from start to finish to win his final. Ben had a tough time and finished 8th. Nick started will with a 4th in leg 1, 4th leg 2 and 5th leg 3 to finish an excellent 5th overall.

Sunday 11th September 4WD

Well what a difference a day makes. The clouds cleared and the sun shone on what was to be a very warm and sunny day. The track was still very damp from all the rain the day before but once qualifying got under way it started to dry out rapidly.

Round 1 was a good start, with Nick putting a fantastic run to go 2nd. Lee had some back fortune whilst also on for a top 5 time when his car stopped before the end of the race due to a mechanical failure. Ben did well with a 9th in the F2’s.

Round 2 and the track was starting to dry but still very slippery in the shaded parts of the track. Nick only managed a 14th and Lee a 13th coming from the back of the grid. Ben also went back a bit with a 12th.

Round 3 and the track was dry in most places and a change of tyre required. Some kind of stagger rib in the front was required and either yellow minis or BB whites on the rear. The increased grip made the set up difficult and both Nick and Lee managed 12th and 13th respectively. Ben on the other hand had got to grip () with the track and put in an impressive 4th in round. This left Nick 8th and Lee 17th overall in the F3,4,5’s and Ben 7th in the F2’s

Round 4 and it was all to play for. Nick needed a good run to cement another top 10 spot as did Ben with Lee looking to get as high as he could. The grip was now extreme and we had all worked on the cars to get them less edgy . The set up changes had helped and Nick put in a 7th, Lee a 9th. This would make Nick 7th overall and Lee unfortunately too little too late and was 18th. Ben continued to improve and put a might drive to take 2nd in round and end up 6th overall going into the finals. Beware the fastest cars in the last round!! John ended up 48th and Arty 54th.

Finals time

As the sun continued to shine brightly the final started. Nick had a great start with a 4th in leg 1 but was not able to follow this up and end up still a very good 8th overall. Lee hit the cone of shame on the warm up lap of his B final and broke his car (school boy error :)). Ben though fared a lot better and end up a very impressive 4th overall which included a 3rd in leg 2 so he clearly had the car going well on the high grip.

Final thoughts

It was a very good weekend for the team with the new RB6.6 showing some real promise after only being in the hands of the drives a few weeks. Being able to use the 3 laydown in the wet was a real surprise and maybe something that can be worked on. The ZX6 proved again how good it is on low grip. But both Lee and Nick struggled to get a good balance set up on the higher grip. Ben though had got it sorted so definitely would be looking to his set up and learning from him on high grip surfaces.
That’s the outdoor season for another year some great results for the team. Roll on the winter and more testing!!!
